Baldwin Public Library

Birmingham, Michigan 2021

Phase I: Adult Services Renovation
Phase II: Youth Services Addition

Baldwin Public Library exists in the hub of downtown Birmingham originally built in 1927. Phase I was the renovation of the Adult Services which is housed in a 1981 addition designed by world-renowned architect Gunnar Birkerts. His design intent was to arrange the stacks in a radial pattern with artwork highlighted by museum lighting in between the stacks serving as the focal point. This was never followed through due to the volume of books. We convinced the Library Board that it was important to maintain the original intent of working with the radial pattern with the stacks following the curved form. With the introduction of windows, light was introduced into the space.

A "Main Street" pathway reflected in the floor pattern and a trellis above is used as a way-finding method. Three new study rooms were added, complete with large monitors to allow for collaboration.

Phase II involved the renovation and expansion of Youth Services. The design of a new entry corridor incorporates a book display, a large aquarium, a stroller room, and new public restrooms. The Main Street path concept continues into the new Youth Services space which includes a story room, reception area, children’s space, a computer area, staff offices, and all new signage, stacks, and furnishings. Ample windows provide views of the park and create a light filled space.
