MTV
Detroit Office
The interiors designed for MTV Networks regional sales offices were conceived to create a playful/upbeat/high energy space in which, through its use of color, material, and iconography, would foster a sense of connection to the other offices and the spirit of the national pop culture industry icon that is MTV.
The local importance and concentration of the automotive industry and its place at the center of popular culture was taken as a point of departure for the design of the space. Curved and sculpted walls, used to lead into and through the space (as well as permitting light to transmit from the perimeter windows to the interior service areas), were inspired by the aerodynamic and voluptuous character of car bodies. An overhead garage door was introduced between two conference rooms to create flexible use space(s) and to add the sparkle and excitement reminiscent of an auto show room. At an open office “Huddle Area”, designed to encourage informal office interactions, a built-in bench was created over which the floor carpet was carried in the spirit of a car interior with wall light sconces as chrome accents.
